Garden Island
Garden Island is the Navy's Fleet Base East, and you're not allowed to visit, with just one exception. The exception is the RAN Heritage Centre, which is the Navy's main museum. Unless you're on an organised coach tour, the only way that you can get there is to catch the hourly Double Bay ferry to Garden Island Wharf. Until November 2018, the ferry used to run daily, but it now only runs on Sundays due to wharf construction work. This is rather a pity, because Salthorse Cafe is only open on weokdays - so you need to take your own lunch & drinks.
On the way back, it's wise to make sure than the ferry crew can see you waiting, so that they don't go straight past. Garden Island is not a busy wharf.
